To update the sound card driver, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.

  2. Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
    If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

  3. Click Sound, video, and game controllers to expand.

  4. Under Sound, video, and game controllers, double-click the entry for your sound card, and then click the Driver tab.
    Note If a Driver tab is not present, the entry that you clicked under Sound, video, and game controllers may not be the correct entry for your sound card. Try clicking any additional entries listed under Sound, video, and game controllers.

  5. Click Update Driver Software.

  6. Follow the Update Driver Software Wizard to update the sound card driver.

Windows XP

To update the sound card driver, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.

If you use Norton Anti Virus make sure it is loaded before the sound card drivers in your autoexec.bat file.

Make sure you are using the the latest version of the game or program.

Try disabling the DirectSound Hardware Acceleration

Download the Windows 9x 4.06.2035 or later reference driver to fix the low recording volume.
Recording in 8 bit will yield in some static because of the resampling down to 8 bit. Use 16 bit for recording until this it fixed. The 8 bit recording problems will be fixed in a future reference drivers.

If you are using the Vortex 2 Windows 9x 4.06.2048 reference drivers follow these instructions:
Go to Add/Remove in the control panel and remove the sound card drivers, the uninstall entry will be called Aureal Vortex AU8830.
You might need to boot to safe mode to uninstall the sound card drivers
Go to the directory where you extracted the sound card drivers
Open Au30mmed.inf
Go to the [AspenOverides.Addreg] section
remove the ; infront of HKR,Config,DisableSBFMIRQLevel,1,1
Save the file
Reboot and install the sound drivers

The pre-release Vortex 2 Windows 9x 4.06.2030/2031 reference drivers have problems with DirectSound and DirectSound3D in some games. Download the Windows 9x 4.06.2035 or later reference driver to fix these problems

Make sure USB is enabled in your system BIOS

Windows NT4

Download the Windows NT4 2.06.01 beta or later reference drivers to fix this problem

Vortex 2 Windows NT4 reference drivers before version 2.04.06 and sound card drivers based on them don't uninstall some parts of the drivers which stops new drivers installing. Instructions to completely remove the older Windows NT4 drivers are available here

Windows 2000 and XP

Low volume with the default Vortex 2 WDM drivers in Windows 2000/XP
Open the Voume Control, open the Options menu, select Properties, select Other, select AC97 Controls, choose OK and change volume of Front/Rear to maximum (If using 2 speakers or headphones) or middle (If using 4 speakers).

Aureal A3D demos won't work in Windows 2000/XP
Only the Aureal A3D 3.0 demos work under Windows 2000 and XP, earlier version of the Aureal A3D demos won't work.

Diamond Monster Sound MX300

Uninstall the Diamond Monster Sound 1.01/2 drivers.
Install the Diamond Monster Sound 1.0 drivers and audio utlities from the CD.
Then install the Diamond Monster Sound 1.01/2 drivers

Diamond Monster Sound MX300 installer takes over audio file types without asking first
Midisoft Media Works 98 and Wave Editor can't be uninstalled without uninstalling the MX300 drivers

Other Diamond Monster Sound cards had similar problems, they were never fixed

Check if a BIOS update is available for your motherboard.
Try changing PNP OS Installed to No in the PnP/PCI Configuration section of your system BIOS.
Try removing the sound card from system and putting it back in.
I had this problem myself and it looks like its motherboard problem, when I upgraded to a new motherboard the problem disappeared.

Copy the Win9x directory from the CD to the hard disk.
Right click on Au30mult.inf, choose properties and clear the Read-only check
Open Au30mult.inf
Find the [AurealSemiconductor] section
Remove the ; infront of %PCIVEN_12EB&DEV_0002.DeviceDesc%=ASPEN_PARENT_DEVICE, PCIVEN_12EB&DEV_0002
Save the file and install the drivers.
